All About Your Car Battery

The car battery has an important job in your vehicle - it's what help your vehicle start and continuing running, as well as providing power to electrical components throughout. Car batteries don't last forever, and often times can be run down due to human error. Here are some frequently asked questions and answers regarding car batteries:

How long do car batteries last?

The average car battery life for a standard battery is between 4-5 years. However, very hot climates can reduce this lifespan to around 3 years. Your own driving habits can also affect the battery's lifespan, so understand when you last had a battery replacement and when you might be due next will be helpful to remember.

How do you know if a battery is still good?

If you suspect your battery is nearing the end of its life, you can either remove your car battery and bring it into our shop for a test or bring your vehicle in and we can test it. Most auto repair shops have machines that will test the battery for charge to determine if it is still good or not.

How much do replacement batteries cost?

The cost of a new battery will depend on the battery you end up purchasing, but the range is usually between $70 - $200. The more expensive batteries tend to last longer and perform better, but ultimately a mechanic can help you decide what is best for you and your vehicle.

Can I jump start a battery myself?

The short answer is yes, you can. However, be sure to read up on how to do so safely. If you are nervous about doing so or don't want to risk it, just bring your car into our shop and we can help. Car batteries can actually be extremely dangerous due to hydrogen gas and voltage. Always use precaution and follow precise directions if attempting to jump start a vehicle battery.
